The underpinning aims of education and learning at Oaklands School

  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone's responsibility

Intent

  • To provide an adapted, mainstream secondary curriculum that delivers access to all National Curriculum subject for all students
  • Successful preparation for adulthood is the priority
  • The Oaklands' curriculum incorporates bodies of knowledge that have intrinsic value to our students, as well as providing opportunities for their developmental needs, health needs, and wellbeing
  • The design of our curriculum ensures that our students are happy today, fulfilled in the future, and inspired to make their world a better place


Implementation

  • Our curriculum establishes an inspiring framework for teachers to act within, using their specialist subject knowledge and inclusive teaching methods to engage all students in learning.
  • Subject leaders and teachers take responsibility to interpret the curriculum framework in the students' interest, personalising the lessons to learners.


Impact

  • A curriculum that enables our students to gain the academic qualifications and sustainable study skills they need to access post 16 education;  the social skills and independent living skills they require to become thriving members of society in the technological 21st century
  • The vast majority of students progress well from their different starting points and progress to the next stage of their education into courses that lead to a higher level of qualification or employment

The Oaklands Curriculum

In Key stage 3 students study:

  • English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Modern Foreign languages, Design and Technology, Art and design, Music, Physical Education, Citizenship, Computing, PHSE (Personal, social, health and economic education) and RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education).

Our students also have lessons in:

  • Careers (Learning for Life and Work)
  • Life Skills

 

In Key stage 4 students study:

  • English, Maths, Science, Art and design, Physical Education, Computing, PHSE and RSHE.

Our students also have lessons in:

  • Careers (Learning for Life and Work)
  • Emotional Literacy lessons
  • Life Skills
  • One vocational subject choice each year is available in KS4. Students can choose from Hospitality and Catering, Animal Care, Health and Fitness, Hair and Beauty, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and ICT/multimedia.
