Citizenship

Team

In Key Stage 3 the citizenship team consists of one full time teacher plus specialist support staff in each session.

Achievement and Progress

At Oaklands, citizenship is delivered at Key Stage 3 where each group receives one 35 minute session each week. Every pupil in citizenship is assessed through continual teacher analysis. This gives opportunites for additional support or extension activities where appropriate. Also every term pupils complete a traffic light self-assessment exercise where targets are set. We now also use the ASDAN Citizenship Short Course as a way of accrediting pupils work in citizenship.

Curriculum Overview

The purpose of teaching citizenship at Oaklands is firstly to develop pupils’ understanding of the world around them and their part in it. Secondly it is to promote active participation in the community of the school. For example being a school councillor, participating in initiatives such as Speaker’s school council awards and fundraising. Furthermore it is to reinforce key functional skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT through the medium of citizenship.

With regards to resources in Citizenship we have up-to-date technology including ipads, laptops and interactive whiteboards. This is to ensure lessons are fun, engaging and relevant.

Additionally pupils’ understanding of citizenship is reinforced through kinaesthetic, audio and visual teaching strategies, educational visits, visiting speakers, audio visual aids and the use of drama.
