Geography

Team

In KS3 the Geography team consists of two full time teachers plus specialist support staff in each session.

Achievement and Progress

At Oaklands, Geography is delivered at KS3 where each group receives two 35 minute sessions each week. Assessment is made through continual teacher analysis which gives opportunities for additional support or extension activities.  Also each term students complete a traffic light self-assessment exercise where targets are set.

Curriculum Overview

Within Geography lessons we firstly aim to develop students’ sense of place in their own environment and to develop an interest in people and places beyond their immediate experience. We also take the opportunity to extend and develop key functional skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT through the medium of geography.

We ensure our resources fully engage the students in an exciting and relevant programme of study and have access to the latest information technology (interactive whiteboards, iPads and laptops) to enhance this.

Students geographical understanding is reinforced through kinaesthetic, audio and visual teaching strategies, fieldwork, modelling, and display work.

KS3 students follow the OCR Entry Level or ASDAN Certificate pathway (when in Year 9). The certificates consist of tasks or independent project work, which is marked internally and sent off for verification.  The students are well prepared throughout the year for this.
